“Well, I like it.” Janet snuggled a little closer. It was comforting, being in his warm embrace. Maybe other people would have shied away from him, but not her. What was the point? His intentions were good, and that’s what mattered most to her. Perhaps he was a bit stronger than the average person (and that was somewhat of an understatement), but that didn’t mean that he had to be treated any differently. Besides, he was the first person in what felt like ages to actually offer some form of comfort, and Jan was all over that.
“No?” She lifted her head to look up at him a moment, shrugging one shoulder. “I guess I don’t really spend a whole lot of time at this size anymore. Not really anything special, is it?” Jan flashed a lopsided smile. “I should probably be letting go of you now, huh? I’ve never really been a good judge of how long a hug should be. I’m a big hugger, but I know some people really aren’t.” Like a majority of the team. They usually pushed her off after a few seconds, unless she decided to be a thorn in their side and hold on longer.
Bob grinned down at Janet, his expression bemused. “You have my full permission to hug me for as long as you’d like. In fact, I encourage it. My therapist once told me that I became the Sentry because I wasn’t hugged enough as a child.” The golden man’s grin widened, partially because that was actually true. “So clearly I have unresolved, hug-related issues.”
For his part, Bobby kept his arms curved around the smaller heroine, one broad palm resting warmly between her shoulder blades. He tilted his head to consider her size and features, “I wouldn’t say there’s ‘nothing special’ about this size. This is your original form, right? Your point of origin? I think that’s pretty special.” Not that the Sentry would apply that same logic to himself. Bob… just Bob… was hardly a form he wanted to flaunt, shrimp that he was.
Janet pulled back an inch, her eyes widening as she looked up at him. “Wow, really? I mean, I knew hugs were important, but that seems kind of drastic.” She searched his expression for a moment, as though trying to decide if he was merely joking around with her. It didn’t matter. Hugs were hugs. Whether he’d really been told that or not, all that mattered to her was that he was willing to let her hug him a bit longer. And so she did, because hugs — with someone who was a close friend or not — allowed her to feel comfortable in a time when things were all going to hell.
“Hmm, you think so?” Janet finally broke away from the hug, eyebrows knitted in thought. She looked herself over, as though she hadn’t done this millions of times over the years while trying to decide if an outfit looked just right. “I mean, I guess it’s not too bad.” She smiled, infinitely cheered by the idea as she placed a hand on her hip. “Who am I kidding? It’s wonderful! And I couldn’t wear most of my gorgeous clothes if I wasn’t this size, so that’s something to consider too. All of that clothing going to waste…” She shuddered dramatically.
Bob laughed softly, his arms closing around Wasp as soon as she moved into his space. “..’million exploding suns, and all that. I guess it comes with the territory.” In truth, he felt relieved and grateful for her willingness to hug him. Most people were afraid to come within twenty feet of him. Receiving a full-blown embrace was like a gift.
Sentry hmmed thoughtfully, peering down at the top of Wasp’s head, “I don’t know that I’ve ever spent much time around you when you’re this size.” He squeezed her lightly, still so careful. Even when she wasn’t tiny, Janet was still… well, tiny. And then when she was larger, she just seemed larger than life. Bobby never got much of a chance to consider her in normal human dimensions.
None of which he was going to mention aloud, because there’s simply no way that would come out right. Sentry liked hugs, and he’d like to have more of them in the future, thank you very much.
